This article "Introduction to the American UL Certification Standards for LED Lighting Products and the UL Certification Process Operation Guide" was collected and edited by Bece Technology. Please indicate the source for reprinting.

Although Edison in the United States invented the light bulb, the development of light bulbs has been rapidly developed in China in the following hundred years. The former major lighting country is no longer the United States. Now our Chinese lamp exports account for a staggering 70%. Basically, they are exported to the European and American markets. It goes without saying that China is now a major manufacturer of LED lamps and other lamps. Therefore, when lamps are exported to the United States, one of the most important certifications is UL certification. Comprehensive safety tester

Everyone knows that the UL certification of the United States is almost the national standard of the United States. UL is a very important setter of the American national standard. The UL standard of the United States, like the GB of China, has the Chinese national standard for lamps and lanterns in China, so in the United States There is the American UL national standard (UL153 standard/UL1598 standard/UL1993 standard/UL8750 standard), and one of the other reasons why the American UL certification is so popular in the United States is that American buyers are buying UL certification marks When buying insurance products, you can get many preferential policies, and the "Electrical Engineering Law" of the United States clearly requires some products to be UL certified. These are some of the main reasons why related UL certified products are popular in the United States. Safety inspection report

UL certification still has many standard requirements for LED and other lighting products. Specifically, there are corresponding standard requirements for housing, structure, driving power, wiring, and use environment. Lithium battery testing

The electrical system of LED lamps is mainly composed of three components: control module, power supply, LED array, and module. The structure of common LED modules is composed of LEDs, PWB, resistors, capacitors, inductors and other components.

Lamp inspection

The UL certification standards define which materials can be used as lamp housings:

1. Sheet metal and extruded aluminum materials meet the thickness in UL standards;

2. The cast metal meets the thickness in the UL standard;

3. The plastic material meets:

① 5VA flame retardant rating (UL 1598 lamps)

② Appropriate temperature grade

③ Pass some mechanical tests and some other parameter requirements in the UL standard.

And the following parts need to provide a shell:

1. Wire connector

2. Open core and enameled wire components (transformer, ballast)

3. Electronic components such as capacitors and resistors

4. Internal wire (AWM) or terminal block

5. Other live parts, switches, etc. that cause arcing

Under UL certification standards, there are three use environments for LED drivers:

1. Dry (Moisture is not always present, but moisture can enter occasionally, with ventilation holes or the like to prevent moisture from accumulating. It is generally located inside the building.)

2. Damp (frequently there is moisture in, and there may even be places where moisture may condense, such as under the eaves)

3. Wet (where you can directly contact rain water, water can drip, splash or flow through, such as street lights)

So what are the standards for LED lamps and lighting products under the UL certification in the United States? The following are introduced one by one:

1. Standard for fixed lamps-UL1598 standard

The lamps covered include those used in non-hazardous areas and installed on branch circuits below 600 V. Basically, almost all permanent-wired lamps on the market that are not suitable for other special lamp standards, from recessed lamps, wall lamps, ceiling lamps, to street lamps, can be considered to belong to the scope of this standard. The content of the standard includes: general requirements, mechanical structure, electrical structure, supplementary requirements for incandescent lamps, supplementary requirements for fluorescent lamps, mechanical testing, electrical testing and other requirements. ROHS detection

2. Standard for mobile (portable) lamps and lanterns-UL153 standard

The lamps covered include work lighting or ambient lighting, and are connected to a branch circuit nominally 120 volts, 15 or 20 amperes through the plug of the power cord. Basically, as long as the lamp uses a power cord with a plug, and it cannot be applied to other special lamp standards, it basically belongs to the scope of this standard.

3. For self-ballasted lamps and their adapters-UL1993 standard

Waterproof detection of lamps and lanterns

UL 1993 is a three-in-one standard jointly promulgated by UL in the United States, CSA in Canada and ANCE in Mexico. It is also an American national standard approved by ANSI. UL 1993 covers self-ballasted lamps and their adapters with rated input voltage from low voltage up to 347V and their own lamp caps. Self-ballasted fluorescent lamps (energy-saving lamps) and their adapters, LED bulbs, LED tubes and other LED light source products to the North American market are all evaluated by UL 1993. The product classification diagram is shown in the figure below. Lamp material inspection

4. Supplementary standard for LED lighting components-UL8750 standard

When the light source and luminous body are LEDs, the LED components need to be evaluated by UL8750.

The above four standards closely surround the three major dangers: electric shock, fire, and mechanical injury. In layman's terms, if it does not cause electric shock to American consumers, does not cause fire, and does not cause any mechanical damage to American consumers, it is a standard lamp that can meet UL certification. LED lamps and lighting products that have obtained UL certification can be marked with the UL certification mark, gaining the trust of American consumers.
